Shop The Sales Like A Stylist

I hate to admit this, but I have never really been a sale shopper until…

I learned to shop a sale rack. During my retail years new season would arrive, and we could predict what items would be leftover in bulk before they hit the shelves ( yes, we were that good). With that experience, sale wasn’t delightful, until I learned to source pieces I loved, and look for key items within the wardrobe I am building for myself and my clients.

End of Summer Sales are here, and the pre-season sales ( Hello, Nordstrom Anniversary sale) are popping up left and right. Sale shopping is overwhelming even for the most seasoned experts like myself, but there are a few tricks I have learned over the years to help make this process more enjoyable. Whether you are shopping in store or online, these shopping tricks will help you make the most of your time and make sure you are bringing home items you love.

Make a list

  • After I do a closet edit with a client, my first step is to make a list of must have items to add to their closet. ( See how to edit your closet in under 30 minutes here ) Whether the client decides to add these items right away, or over time is up to her discretion, but there is always a list. Sales are the perfect time to check your list and see if any of the items you are looking for are on sale.

Here’s an example of my personal list.

look for basics with an edge

  • Sale is the best time to look for basics with a fashionable twist - a unique black blazer, a satin slip dress, sandals in a bold color. Alongside your list, think of what will make getting dress more fun; is it texture, a bold color, sequins? Then assess what you wear most and look for an item similar in a bold silhoutte.

    • Example : I wear black blazers every day, but I love the color red, so I’ve added a red blazer to my list.

    • Example: I wear dresses to all of my events, I should look for dresses that work in my everyday

    • Example: Denim is a staple I wear 7 days a week, I am going to look for a new silhouette that is outside of my comfort zone

use the search button & filters

  • I’m an online shopaholic, and I will crown myself queen of online shopping and searching, which is why I am here to tell you to utilize every filter a store gives you. When you locate the sale section; optimize your search by size, style, price point, color etc - this will populate a list that is smaller and tailored to what you are looking for. This will often prevent any out of stock disappointment.

    • Type exactly what you are looking for in the search button “ Red strapless dress”. Whether it is on sale or not, this will allow you to find items faster, and it’s my favorite shopping tip!

    • Don’t forget to check your saved, hearts, wishlists, some of the items may have gone on sale, and then you know you already love it.

Now to the good stuff.

I’d love to help you edit your closet before shopping summer sales and fall shopping begins. I am offering a summer special through the end of July $250 for a one hour closet edit ( normally $350).
