Getting Dressed For Your Next Black Tie Event

A beautiful wax sealed envelope arrived in your mailbox, and the “black tie” dress code appears at the bottom of the invitation, how do you prepare? As a red carpet and event stylist, I take many things into consideration before dressing a client for a major event. My first step is to look at the invitation, location of the event, time of day, and of course the occasion ( wedding, charity function, business event, premiere). You would be surprised, what you wear to someone’s black tie wedding is very different than a choice for a charity gala. what Does the black tie dress code really mean?
Black Tie for women is a floor length gown, and for men it is a formal suit or tuxedo with a bow tie. For women I look for floor length gowns in chiffon, lace, sequin velvet, and silk. For men, a tuxedo is an easy choice. In California there is room for interpretation, a very formal cocktail dress can serve you well at a black tie event, but on the east coast this would not be appropriate. When in doubt, don’t be afraid to ask the host for clarification on the attire, and what might be the best choice for the occasion.

How do I know i won’t be overdressed?
Dress code requests like “beach cocktail”, “business cocktail”, and “dress to impress” can be confusing and leave room for personal style interpretations, while black tie is very clear. What is great about a black tie dress code is that it literally means black tie for men, or floor length gowns for women. When I work with my clients, I always advise to find the look that feels right for their personal style, and if it’s a bold choice, you are giving others permission to be bold too. Fashion and event dressing is fun after all.
how do i avoid a wardrobe mishap or faux paus ?
Everyone always worries about wearing the same dress to an event. In the celebrity world, it is rare for that to happen since there are PR teams working together to make sure this is close to impossible. However, when you are shopping at the same stores and online, there is a possibility of this occurring. The best way to avoid wearing the same look as someone else is to wear vintage, have a custom dress made, or check your closet for past season looks that might work for the occassion. I always recommend starting a group chat with other friends who are attending the same event to check in on everyone’s dress choice.
What shoes should i choose?
Comfort during a long evening is key, especially when you are socializing with other guests, dancing, and spending most of the night on your feet. Check to see where you will spend the evening ; on grass, gravel, pavement, or in a ballroom - these details affect how to choose your shoes. I would put the stilettos away for the night, and choose a moderate heel or wedge to pair with your gown. I’ve been known to try flats or formal sandals with a floor length gown, it does work, and provides comfort all night.
